Queer Tattoos is a collection of tattoos that represent the identity of LGBTQ people around the world. It's a mixture of both known symbols and alternative tattoos accompanied by a range of stories told by the tattoo owners.
The collection is divided into categories that point towards visual and/or contextual similarities. The publication provides an insight into queer visual culture and what aspects of the ‘queer experience’ people find significant enough to immortalise on their skin.
The project arose from an interest in the signalling of queerness in appearance and taxonomies of style. I based the book design on the typesetting of LGBTQ publications and newsletters from the 80s and 90s. The design of the screen printed folded cover is based on the layers of tattoo stencils.
